Why This Route
Imagine waking up in a 600-year-old village on a mountainside. Terraced fields cascade down to the valley below. The only sounds are birdsong and distant water buffalo. This is Longji — where Yao ethnic minority families have farmed these slopes since the Yuan Dynasty. At sunset, Golden Buddha Summit turns every ridge into liquid gold.
Now picture a cliff-top viewpoint at sunrise. The Li River glows orange below. Morning mist lifts off the water, and karst peaks emerge like islands in a cloud sea. This is Yangshuo — the landscape that has inspired Chinese painters for a thousand years.
In between these two places, you’ll trek ancient trails and sleep in stilted wooden houses. You’ll also drive through countryside that most visitors never see. This is the China that guidebooks only photograph from a distance. But you’ll walk right through it.
Day 1: Into the Terraces
The drive from Guilin to Longji takes about 2.5 hours. By the time you reach Dazhai, you’re already at 800 meters. Terraces stretch in every direction. First, you’ll stop at Yellow Luo Yao Long Hair Village. Here, Yao women with hair past their waists walk barefoot between stilted houses — daily life, not a performance. Next, you check into your homestay. It’s a traditional Yao stilted house with a balcony view worth traveling thousands of miles for.
After dropping your bag, hike up to Golden Buddha Summit (1,100m) for sunset. The late-afternoon light hits the terraces, and every ridge glows like liquid gold. Only overnight guests see this — day-trippers leave by 5 PM. At night, thousands of small bulbs trace every terrace contour. Then dinner at the homestay.
Day 2: The 16 km Traverse
Today is the big traverse: 12 km from Dazhai to Pingan. These trails have connected the villages since the Yuan Dynasty. The path climbs through bamboo forest, then levels onto a ridge with views for miles. Terraces cascade down both sides. Depending on the season, you’ll see flooded mirrors, green rice waves, or golden harvest terraces. Along the way, you’ll also pass ancient villages where life hasn’t changed in centuries.
By early afternoon, you reach Pingan Village. The car is waiting for the drive to Yangshuo — about 3 hours through countryside most tourists never see. You’ll arrive by late afternoon, tired but accomplished.
Day 3: Yangshuo Sunrise & Li River
Hotel pick-up at 4:30 AM. Yes, it’s early — but here’s why it’s worth it. Xianggong Mountain offers the best sunrise view along the Li River. You arrive in the dark and climb 15 minutes to the summit. Then you wait. When the sun breaks over the karst peaks, the river glows orange below. Mist lifts off the water like steam, and the peaks emerge one by one. It’s a moment that resets your idea of scenery.
After descending, grab breakfast at a village stall. Then start the 10 km Li River hike through iconic karst scenery. Limestone towers rise from the water. Bamboo groves sway in the breeze. Meanwhile, water buffalo stand in the paddies. The highlight is Huangbu — the exact spot where the famous 20-yuan-bill photograph was taken.
After lunch, you have options. You could climb Laozhai Mountain for one final panoramic view (30 minutes up, steep but worth it). Or just wander around Xingping and grab coffee. Don’t feel like hiking 10 km? Alternatively, swap for a hand-poled bamboo raft on the Yulong River. Want to add another day? Extend your Yangshuo experience →
What We Don’t Recommend
- The commercial Li River cruise. It’s a 4-hour boat ride with 200 other tourists and loudspeakers playing pop music. In fact, you see the same scenery from the riverbank for free.
- Rushing Longji in a half-day. Day-trippers arrive at 10 AM, climb to one viewpoint, and leave by lunch. As a result, you miss the sunset, the night lights, and the morning mist. If you’re going to Longji, spend the night.
- West Street after 10 PM. It’s touristy even by Chinese standards. Overpriced beer, souvenir shops, and bars blasting English pop music. Instead, go before 9 PM. The good restaurants are on the side streets.
Good to Know
Is 3 days too rushed for Guilin + Yangshuo?
Honestly, if you have more time, add one more day in Yangshuo. The karst landscape is stunning, and it’s worth slowing down. A relaxed morning, a cooking class, or side activities like Via Ferrata all work well. Three days works. But four gives you breathing room.
What the service can include
2 nights of accommodation (1 night Longji homestay, 1 night Yangshuo boutique hotel). Also included: all entrance tickets, expert English-speaking guides, and private vehicle transfers.
Not included: flights or trains to/from Guilin, most meals, and travel insurance.
Can you customize this?
Absolutely. For example, add a day in Yangshuo for Via Ferrata? Swap the Day 3 hike for bamboo rafting? Start from a different city? Tell us what you have in mind →
