The city is divided by the Huangpu River: the historic Bund on the west bank showcases colonial-era grandeur, while the futuristic Pudong skyline on the east bank represents modern China at its most ambitious. Between these two poles lie endless neighborhoods to explore — from the French Concession's tree-lined avenues to the vibrant art districts of M50 and West Bund.
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) offer pleasant weather with mild temperatures and lower rainfall, perfect for walking tours and outdoor sightseeing.
Plan at least 3 to 4 days. Two days for the Bund, Yu Garden, and French Concession; one day for Zhujiajiao water town; and another for local experiences like a cooking class or acupressure session.
Most travelers need a Chinese visa. China offers 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit at Shanghai Pudong and Hongqiao airports for citizens of 55 countries. You must have a confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region. Check your country's visa requirements before traveling.
Chinese Yuan (CNY/¥). Credit cards are increasingly accepted in hotels and upscale restaurants, but cash or mobile payment (Alipay, WeChat Pay) is still preferred at local shops and markets.
Pudong (PVG): Metro Line 2 goes directly downtown (about 1.5 hours). The Maglev train to Longyang Road Station takes 8 minutes, then transfer to metro. Taxi to city center costs about ¥200 (around 1 hour). Hongqiao (SHA): Metro Line 2 or 10 goes directly downtown. Both airports have taxis and ride-hailing options.
