But Guilin is more than a postcard. The Longji Rice Terraces, carved into mountainsides over 650 years ago, are still farmed by Yao and Zhuang ethnic communities who live in wooden stilted houses above the clouds. In Yangshuo, a short drive south, cyclists pedal through a dreamscape of peaks and paddy fields, stopping at riverside villages where time seems to stand still.

Absolutely. Guilin's karst landscape is one of the most spectacular in the world — the kind of scenery that defines "China" in the global imagination. The Longji Rice Terraces add a cultural layer that few other destinations can match: 650-year-old agricultural engineering still practiced by ethnic minority communities. If you enjoy hiking, photography, or simply being somewhere genuinely beautiful, Guilin delivers. The city itself is smaller and less touristy than places like Xi'an or Chengdu, which means a more relaxed pace.
The terraces transform with the seasons, so timing matters. May–June brings the flooded mirror period — paddies filled with water reflect the sky like thousands of mirrors stacked on the mountainside, with no rice plants yet. July–September turns the terraces into waves of emerald green. October is peak golden rice season, when the paddies glow amber under autumn sun. They're not competitors — they complement each other. Guilin city is your gateway: compact, convenient, with cave attractions like Reed Flute Cave and a lively evening market scene. The Longji Rice Terraces are 2 hours north of Guilin city. Yangshuo, 1.5 hours south, is where you'll find the classic Li River karst scenery, cycling routes through paddy fields, and a more backpacker-friendly vibe. Guilin Liangjiang International Airport (KWL) has direct flights from most major Chinese cities including Shanghai (2.5h), Beijing (3h), Chengdu (2h), and Guangzhou (1h). High-speed trains connect Guilin to Guangzhou (2.5h), Changsha (3h), and Guiyang (2h). From Guilin city, the Longji Rice Terraces are about a 2-hour drive — included in our guided tour with hotel pickup. For longer distances, fly into Guilin from Shanghai or Beijing and then continue south to Yangshuo by car or bus.
