The High Trail is moderately challenging but very doable for anyone in reasonable fitness. The famous 28 Bends section involves steep switchbacks up to 2,670 meters, but the path is well-maintained with tea houses along the way. You do not need technical climbing skills — just sturdy shoes and plenty of water. The Old Town charges an 80-yuan maintenance fee valid for multiple days, and it is worth it — but visit before 8 AM or after 6 PM to avoid the crowds and see the lanes at their most atmospheric. The Mu's Mansion, Wangu Tower, and the small Naxi museums inside justify the price on their own. For a quieter experience, walk 15 minutes north to Black Dragon Pool Park, where Jade Dragon Snow Mountain reflects perfectly in the water.
April through May brings wildflowers and clear skies, while September through October offers crisp air and the best visibility of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Summer (June–August) is monsoon season — the gorge can be slippery and mountain views are often cloudy. Winter is cold but dry, with spectacular snow on the peaks and almost no tourists. For trekking, autumn is ideal: cool temperatures, stable weather, and golden forests on Laoyao Mountain.
