Overview

Open-roof watchtowers, endless mountain ridges, morning mist drifting through stone arches — this is the Great Wall image you have seen on magazine covers. It is almost always Jinshanling.

The 400-year-old Ming brickwork catches golden light in a way no restored section can match. Each of the 67 watchtowers has its own shape, giving photographers endless compositions. Shoot sunset from the General Tower, sunrise through the fog.

Your Jinshanling Great Wall photography tour gives you 2 days — one sunset, one sunrise, one night at the mountain foot.

Itinerary

Day 1

Beijing to Jinshanling, Sunset on the Wall

Free pickup from your Beijing hotel within the 4th Ring Road. The drive takes about 2.5 hours to Jinshanling. On arrival, check in to your guesthouse at the mountain foot.

When the afternoon light turns soft, head up to the wall. Rather than waiting at one fixed spot, hike along the ridge first — photograph the warm glow on the ancient stone, try different angles as the light shifts, then settle into your favorite watchtower when the moment feels right. The golden hour at Jinshanling is legendary: long shadows, glowing arches, and the wall stretching endlessly into the mountains.

After coming down, dinner is on your own($25 per person if you need us to order). Then rest at the guesthouse.

If you want to go back up at night to photograph the Great Wall under the stars, let your guide know in advance — the night sky here is spectacular.

Accommodation is at the mountain-foot guesthouse. Rooms are priced at $50 per room per night — specify how many rooms you need when booking.

Day 2

Sunrise, Free Exploration, Return to Beijing

Your day starts before dawn. Climb back up to your chosen watchtower. As morning mist rises from the valleys, the wall emerges in soft silver light, winding across the ridges like a sleeping dragon. This is the shot that makes the trip worth it.

After sunrise, you have the morning to explore on your own. Hike to nearby towers you have not shot yet, try different lenses and angles, or simply sit and take in the view. Jinshanling rewards those who take their time.

Around 11:00 AM, check out and head back to Beijing. Your driver drops you at your hotel around 1:30 PM. Day 2 lunch is on your own.

Good to Know

  • What to Bring: Comfortable hiking shoes are a must — Jinshanling has steep, uneven steps. Bring your camera gear, extra batteries, and a tripod for sunrise and sunset shots. Pack layers, a rain jacket, sunscreen, a hat, and at least 1 liter of water per day. A headlamp is handy for the pre-dawn hike.
  • Best Time to Visit: Spring (April-May) brings wildflowers and mild weather. Autumn (September-October) offers the clearest skies and warm golden tones. Winter covers the wall in snow — magical but very cold. Summer is hot and humid, but morning and evening light is still beautiful. You can explore our Beijing travel guide for more trip planning tips.
  • Physical Level: You walk up and down the wall at your own pace. The trails involve steep stone steps but no technical climbing. A moderate fitness level is enough.
  • How to Book: We run daily departures. Contact us to reserve your dates. We recommend booking at least 1 week in advance.
