Zhangjiajie Hiking Tour: Yaozizhai Secret Trail & Avatar Peaks

📍 Zhangjiajie, China ⏱️ 2 Days / 1 Night Moderate
Available: Daily Departure

Overview

This Zhangjiajie hiking tour sidesteps the crowds. The pillars are world-famous — the tourist traps are too. Day 1 takes you to Yaozizhai(鹞子寨) — a trail that closed for a decade and just reopened. Most tourists don't even know it exists. Only hikers in the know make the trip. You'll walk through primal forest as sandstone pillars rise from the earth around you — the same dramatic views but a fraction of the people. Choose the 8km easy route or push for the 12km loop through Jinbian Stream. Day 2 is the classic route done right: Bailong Elevator up, Yuanjiajie(袁家界)'s Avatar peaks, then Tianzi Mountain(天子山) before a cable car descent. Two days, one quiet secret, all the icons.

Itinerary

Day 1

The Quiet Side of Zhangjiajie

8:30 AM — Pick Up in Zhangjiajie City
Your guide meets you at your hotel or the train station. Drive 40 minutes to Wulingyuan, the park's main entrance.

9:30 AM — Enter the Park
Take the shuttle into the core zone. Most visitors head straight for Yuanjiajie. We don't. We go the other way — toward Yaozizhai.

10:00 AM — Yaozizhai Hike
This trail was closed for 10 years. It reopened recently, and most tourists still don't know it exists — only hikers in the know come here. The path winds through primal forest, and as you walk, spectacular sandstone pillars rise from the earth around you. The same dramatic views as the crowded spots, but you might have them to yourself. The trail is well-maintained but raw — stone steps, dirt paths, no supply shops. Bring your own lunch.

Choose your route:
- 8km option — Yaozizhai ridge loop. 3-4 hours. Easy. ~400m elevation gain. Best if you want a relaxed pace.
- 12km option — Yaozizhai ridge + Jinbian Stream. 5-6 hours. Moderate. ~600m elevation gain. The stream section is flat and shaded, winding through a gorge beneath towering walls. This is the full experience.

3:00 PM — Finish the Hike
Head back to Wulingyuan. Your legs have earned a rest.

4:00 PM — Check In at Wulingyuan
Drop your bags at the hotel. The rest of the evening is yours.

Evening — Local Food & Optional Show
Dinner is on your own. Try Tujia Three-in-One Pot (土家三下锅) — a hearty stew of smoked pork, tofu and vegetables. Other local favorites: Tujia sticky rice cake (打糕), straw-hat noodles (草帽面), artemisia rice cakes (蒿子粑粑), and kudzu root powder (葛根粉). A heads-up: Hunan food is spicy. If you can't take the heat, tell the restaurant "bù là" (not spicy).

Optional: Catch the Charm Xiangxi (魅力湘西) show — Miao drum dancing, ancient Maogusi dance, and outdoor stunt performances. A classic Zhangjiajie evening.

8km (easy, ~400m gain) or 12km (moderate, ~600m gain) | Stone steps and forest trails

Day 2

The Icons, Yuanjiajie, Tianzi Mountain

8:00 AM — Enter the Park
Early start. The shuttle to Bailong Elevator takes 20 minutes. Getting there before the tour groups makes all the difference.

8:30 AM — Bailong Elevator
The world's tallest outdoor lift — 326 meters up a cliff face in under two minutes. Yes, it's touristy. But it's also genuinely impressive. And doing it early means a short queue instead of an hour-long one.

9:00 AM — Yuanjiajie (Avatar Hallelujah Mountain)
This is the one from the photos — the pillar that inspired Avatar's floating mountains. The First Bridge Under Heaven is here too: a natural rock arch connecting two cliff walls over a 350-meter drop. The viewing platforms get packed later. Early morning, you can actually take photos without elbows in the frame.

11:30 AM — Shuttle to Tianzi Mountain
A scenic 30-minute ride through the park's interior. Watch the pillars scroll past like a slow-motion movie.

12:00 PM — Tianzi Mountain
The highest point in the park at 1,262 meters. On a clear day, the view stretches across hundreds of sandstone peaks. Cloud Sea Peak, Imperial Writing Brush Peak — the names are poetic, the views are not. They're raw and massive. Bring your own lunch, or grab something at the mountain-top restaurant (simple but decent).

2:00 PM — Tianzi Mountain Cable Car Down
A 2km descent with panoramic views the whole way. Your legs will thank you.

3:00 PM — Return to Zhangjiajie City
Back to the city by 4:00 PM. Drop-off at your hotel or the train station.

~8km hiking | ~300m elevation gain | Moderate | Mostly paved trails and steps
