Itinerary

Day 1

Chongqing 8D: Cyberpunk City Walk

Stop 1: Eling Park — Two Rivers Pavilion
Meet your guide at Eling Station (Line 1) at 08:30. The walk begins at Eling Park — Chongqing's oldest public park, perched on the narrowest point of the Yuzhong Peninsula. Head straight to the Two Rivers Pavilion, one of the best vantage points in the city to see both the Yangtze and Jialing rivers stretching out below. Along the way, you'll catch locals practicing tai chi on cliff-edge pavilions — this is Chongqing as locals live it.

Stop 2: Three-Layer Road & Liziba Monorail
From Eling, follow the cliff-line trail known as "Three-Layer Road" — a pathway carved into the vertical rock face, winding through lush greenery with unexpected views of the rivers below. The trail leads down to Liziba Station, the world-famous spot where the monorail glides directly into a residential apartment building. Your guide takes you to the ground-level viewing platform to watch the train disappear into the building — then you enter the station and board the monorail to Jiaochangkou. Watching Chongqing's stacked skyline through the monorail windows is an experience unlike any other city.

Stop 3: Jiefangbei & Bayi Food Street
Emerge in Chongqing's commercial center. Your guide takes you to the Liberation Monument — China's only monument dedicated to the victory of the War of Resistance — then drops you into Bayi Food Street for a long, unhurried lunch. This is Chongqing's street food cathedral: chongqing xiaomian, chaoshou, bingfen, shancheng tangyuan, chen mahua, and liangxia.

Stop 4: Mountain City Alley (Shancheng Xiang)
Walk to the north entrance of Mountain City Alley — Chongqing's only street named after the "Mountain City." This century-old neighborhood clings to the cliff between the Upper and Lower City, with hanging walkways suspended over the abyss and the abandoned Renai Church overtaken by wild gardens. Stop at a traditional teahouse for gaiwan tea — if you're lucky, a Sichuan opera face-changing performance happens right at your table.

Stop 5: Eighteen Stairs (Shibati)
Just five minutes from the south end of Mountain City Alley, arrive at the Eighteen Stairs — the ancient stone stairway connecting the Upper City to the Lower City. Walk from bottom to top, passing viewing platforms and craft shops along the way.

Stop 6: Chaotianmen — Two Rivers Confluence
Take the metro to Chaotianmen, where the Yangtze and Jialing rivers meet — one turquoise, one muddy brown. One of the most dramatic urban river views in China.

Stop 7: Two Rivers Confluence Riverside Trail
From Chaotianmen, follow the newly opened Two Rivers Confluence Riverside Trail — a 2.4 km waterfront walkway passing ancient stone inscriptions, Song Dynasty wall ruins, and multiple open-air river platforms. Flat, slow, and designed for lingering.

Stop 8: Hongyadong & Qiansimen Bridge
Enter Hongyadong, the iconic 11-story stilted complex built into the cliff face. Your guide leads you through several characteristic viewing platforms before you cross Qiansimen Bridge on foot for the single best vantage point — the full 11-story facade glowing in gold and red, reflected in the dark river below.

Good to Know

  • What to Wear: Comfortable walking shoes are essential. The trails involve downhill stone steps, uneven surfaces, and steep stairways. Bring a light jacket for riverside breezes after sunset.
  • Spice Warning: Chongqing food is notoriously spicy. At lunch, order "wei la" (mild spicy) if you are not used to heat. Pair your meal with bingfen (iced jelly) or soy milk to cool down.
  • Metro Experience: We use the metro twice to skip uphill sections, including a ride through the famous Liziba station where you can see Chongqing from the monorail's aerial perspective. Your guide handles all tickets.
  • Photography: The best night photos of Hongyadong are taken from Qiansimen Bridge. Your guide leads you to the classic vantage point after the lights turn on around 19:30.
